New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair a crucial meeting on Tuesday evening to assess the implementation of three new criminal laws in Uttar Pradesh. The meeting, to be held at the North Block, will also feature Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
As part of these discussions, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has urged all states and Union Territories to implement Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagaraik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). This section mandates state prison authorities to provide relief to undertrial prisoners. States and UTs have been directed to submit their progress reports on BNSS implementation in a prescribed format starting January 1, 2025.
Launch of BHARATPOL Portal to Strengthen Law Enforcement
Amit Shah is also set to launch the BHARATPOL portal in New Delhi on Tuesday during the meeting. This platform, developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), aims to enhance real-time information sharing among law enforcement agencies (LEAs) across India. The portal is designed to expedite international police assistance, addressing the increasing complexities of transnational crimes.
The official launch event will take place at Bharat Mandapam, marking a significant step toward modernizing India's law enforcement capabilities. The BHARATPOL portal enables instant coordination among various agencies to combat crimes like cybercrimes, human trafficking, drug smuggling, financial fraud, and online radicalization.
How BHARATPOL Works
The CBI, as the National Central Bureau (NCB) for INTERPOL in India, coordinates international criminal investigations. This coordination involves working with INTERPOL Liaison Officers (ILOs) and Unit Officers (UOs) from central, state, and UT-level law enforcement agencies. Traditionally, these communications relied on letters, emails, and faxes.
The growing scope of global criminal activities has created a need for faster and more secure communication channels. The BHARATPOL portal addresses this gap by offering a centralized, web-based platform that allows stakeholders to collaborate seamlessly.
Empowering Law Enforcement with Technology
The portal is accessible through the CBI’s official website and aims to streamline information exchange between Indian agencies and their global counterparts. With features like real-time data sharing, the BHARATPOL portal is expected to significantly reduce response times in international investigations, strengthening India's ability to tackle cross-border crimes effectively.
