Copenhegan: Denmark is grappling with a heightened security alert after a recent threat issued by terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, aimed at the nation and Sweden. The threat comes in the wake of public burnings of copies of the Qur'an in Denmark, which have sparked intense global condemnation and raised concerns about security.

The Danish security and intelligence service, Politiets Efterretningstjeneste (PET), confirmed Al-Qaeda's threat and stated that the Danish intelligence services were vigilantly monitoring the situation. The threat was perceived as particularly significant due to the recent provocative acts of burning the Qur'an in Denmark, actions that have drawn negative attention from militant groups and subsequently pose potential risks to Danish interests abroad.

Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen conveyed the government's serious response to the threat, expressing concern for the safety of Danish ambassadors and diplomats abroad. Security alerts have been issued to Danish embassies, and the government has urged host countries to provide necessary support.

Rasmussen strongly condemned the burning of the Qur'an, labelling it as "indefensible and blasphemous." He highlighted that these actions contradicted Danish societal values and emphasized the government's intention to explore legal tools to prevent such incidents.

Denmark, known for its liberal and secular stance, protects freedom of expression through its constitution and does not have blasphemy laws. However, in light of recent events, the government is considering the possibility of intervening in specific situations where the denigration of religions or sacred texts poses a risk to peace and harmony.

This shift in approach is seen as a significant change from Denmark's stance during the Muhammad caricature crisis in 2005. While the country staunchly defended freedom of expression at the time, the current situation presents a willingness to reassess its approach, especially in the face of security concerns and potential threats from extremist groups like Al-Qaeda.
