Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has given her first reaction on the cancellation of lateral entry recruitments by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Mayawati has described this decision as the result of BSP's strong opposition. Along with this, she has also made an important demand from the Modi government.

Mayawati's statement:

On social media site X (earlier called Twitter), BSP chief Mayawati wrote that the central government had issued an advertisement for lateral entry of 47 people from outside at huge salaries instead of promotion and appointment through normal process including reservation on high posts like joint secretary and director. After BSP's strong protest, this advertisement has been canceled. But she emphasized that all such anti-reservation processes need to be stopped at every level.

Centre's decision on lateral entry:

Amid the growing political controversy over the issue of lateral entry, the central government has taken a big step and directed UPSC to withdraw the lateral entry recruitments. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh wrote a letter to the Union Public Service Commission, stating that reservation was not provided in the recruitments made on the basis of lateral entry. That is why it is being withdrawn.

The letter also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to emphasize on social justice and reservation enshrined in the Constitution for lateral entry to higher posts. Therefore, it is necessary to withdraw this advertisement.

Centre's stand on social justice and reservation:

The central government also stressed in the letter that it is very important to maintain the constitutional mandate towards social justice. Along with this, it should be ensured that deserving candidates from the marginalized sections get proper representation in government services.

Opposition to the opposition:

It is worth noting that on August 17, the Union Public Service Commission had issued an advertisement for appointments on the basis of lateral entry, which was strongly opposed by the Congress and other opposition parties. The opposition said that this process would endanger the reservation system and social justice would remain incomplete. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also criticized this move on social media and said that the central government is trying to snatch away reservation from Dalits, tribals and backward classes through lateral entry, which is absolutely unacceptable.

Mayawati's demand:

Mayawati welcomed the decision and said that such anti-reservation processes need to be stopped completely. She said that this step is the result of BSP's strong protest, but it should also be ensured that such policies are not implemented in future.
