A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, causing tremors in several regions including Nowshera, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Malakand, Kohat, Buner, Swat, Swabi, and Landi Kotal.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border area, with a depth of 220 kilometers. The quake had coordinates of 36.51 North latitude and 71.19 East longitude.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. The earthquake follows a similar event in September when a 5.7 magnitude quake affected parts of Punjab, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.
The earthquake was felt in multiple regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and various parts of Punjab, with no immediate reports of casualties or major property damage. The epicenter of the quake was located along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, with a depth of 220 kilometers.
Officials have reassured the public that there have been no fatalities reported as of now, though the tremors were strong enough to be felt across a wide area. This event is part of Pakistan's frequent seismic activity, with the region being prone to earthquakes due to its location near several fault lines.
Pakistan has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, with the most catastrophic being the 2005 earthquake, which claimed more than 74,000 lives and caused extensive damage, particularly in the northern regions.
