What’s Changing from December 1: New Rules on Gas, Banking, and Telecom

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the deadline for the implementation of the traceability mandate for commercial messages, including one-time passwords (OTPs), to December 1. This regulation aims to prevent misuse, including spam and phishing, by ensuring the origin of such messages can be traced.

Telecom operators had raised concerns about potential disruptions starting November 1 if the traceability rules were enforced, particularly since many telemarketers and business entities, like banks, rely on commercial messages. As a result, TRAI has decided to delay the enforcement of this rule by a month. The new deadline gives telecom companies additional time to comply with the new mandate.

The updated regulations will ensure that users will no longer receive misleading OTPs or commercial messages, providing a more secure environment by addressing issues like scams and phishing.
