Shillong: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has given the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), the first private university in the northeastern region, a "A Grade" accreditation rating, according to officials. The university, which is only eight years old, has been accredited by NAAC, an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country, according to a USTM spokesperson. Universities are assessed on a seven-point scale. USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque thanked the Meghalaya government for supporting the university's efforts, saying the five-year assessments are based on five successful batches of students. The NAAC peer team praised USTM's best practises, including its Payback Policy and village adoption, he added. According to a press release from USTM, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated the university on its NAAC accreditation. The private university began its journey with only one computer and four students, according to USTM officials, and now has a student body of around 6,000 from all eight northeastern states.
