Recently the Supreme Court of India has allowed a petitioner seeking an investigation into recent communal violence in Tripura to respond to the State Government's response, which asked the court to dismiss the case. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who represents advocate Ehtesham Hashmi, recently testified before a bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud that while 'C' grade TV channels engage in such foolishness, this is not what one would anticipate from a state government in such a sensitive matter of communal violence. In its affidavit, the Tripura government questioned why the public-spirited persons who filed the PIL were mute about the violence in West Bengal. Bhushan cited the State's answer, saying it did not portray it in a favourable light. After hearing the arguments, the bench, which also included Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, asked the petitioner to respond to the case and set a date for a new hearing on January 31. "No individual or group of individuals professionally working as public-spirited persons may selectively exercise this court's exceptional authority to achieve some apparent but undisclosed motive," the Tripura government stated. It further stated that the claims against it began with the release of pre-planned and planted pieces in tabloids. The State Government went on to say that these individuals were selectively upset by it, while staying silent on West Bengal's large-scale post-poll violence. The Supreme Court issued notice on a petition seeking an impartial Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into communal violence in Tripura on November 29. Hashmi filed the petition through Bhushan and named the Centre, the Tripura DGP, and the Tripura Government as respondents. Armed mobs perpetrated hate crimes in Tripura between October 13 and October 27 of last year. "These included destroying mosques, torching Muslim-owned businesses, organising rallies shouting Islamophobic and genocidal hate slogans, and delivering hate speeches against Muslims in various regions of Tripura," according to the petition. According to the petition, no one has been arrested for desecrating mosques, vandalised shops, or delivering hate speeches directed at the Muslim community.
