AGARTALA: In the recently completed by-polls for the four assembly seats in Tripura, the CPI-M-led Left Front suffered a significant blow, while the Congress, with a single-seat, returned to the state parliament after nine years. The 60-member house's entire membership of the ruling BJP remained at 36. With only 2.85% of the vote, the newcomer Trinamool Congress was unable to make a substantial influence. The results of the June 23 by-polls, which were announced on Sunday, showed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in power, had won three seats, including the seat of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who had defeated Congress candidate Asish Kumar Saha by a margin of 6,104 votes to become the state assembly's first-ever representative from Town Bordowali. Malina Debnath, a BJP candidate, won the Jubarajnagar seat by 4,572 votes over her closest CPI-M opponent Sailendra Chandra Nath, and Swapna Das (Paul), another BJP candidate, won the Surma (SC) seat by 4,583 votes against independent candidate Baburam Satnami. The CPI-M lost its seat in Jubarajnagar, but the saffron party managed to keep the other two. Sudip Roy Barman, a former member of the BJP who now leads the Congress, won the election for the sixth time in a row in Agartala, defeating his BJP opponent Ashok Sinha by a margin of 3,163 votes, in a significant political development.
