Panaji: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Girish Chodankar has said that the Goa Congress will file a petition for suspension of 10 rebel MLAs who had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Goa Assembly. The response comes almost a month after Congress MLAs joined the BJP. At the time when the Karnataka Congress and the Janata Dal Secular (JDS) government was almost to collapse, 10 Congress MLAs joined the BJP together. In Goa, earlier the Congress had more strength than the BJP. The Congress had a total of 15 MLAs, 10 of them joined the BJP. With more than two-thirds of the number, the defection law could not be enforced on these MLAs. Goa has a total of 40 assembly seats. The BJP's tally in the Assembly has reached 27 since the induction of 10 rebel Congress MLAs. However, a majority of 21 MLAs is required. At present, the Congress has 5, GFP has 3, NCP and MGP each and three independents. The BJP also got the support of all the three independent MLAs.
