Chennai: Former AIADMK MP V Maitreyan on Friday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Earlier, Maitreyan was a member of the BJP till early 2000, but later joined the AIADMK. He is the son of freedom movement activist KR Vasudevan. Maitreyan joined the BJP in the presence of its national general secretary Arun Singh. Maitreyan was a member of the RSS in his early days. In 1991, Maitreyan became an executive member of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. From 1995 to 1997, he served as the General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP. He held several high positions in the party before resigning from the party in 2000. The same year he moved to AIADMK. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from AIADMK several times. However, Maitreyan was expelled from the primary membership of the AIADMK party in 2022. AIADMK general secretary Palaniswami had sacked Maitreyan citing his "anti-party activities and attempts to defame the party". Maitreyan was aiadmk's organising secretary before his expulsion. Maitreyan was born on November 21, 1955. He completed his schooling in Chennai (then Madras). Later, he studied medicine at the Government Medical College in Nagpur. He holds an MD degree in Medical Oncology from Madras Medical College and a DM degree in Medical Oncology from the Cancer Institute of Chennai.
