Sydney Metro West Construction Advances with New Tunnel-Boring Machines

Sydney's transportation landscape is set to expand significantly as construction progresses on the Sydney Metro West project. While the newly-opened Sydney Metro line is already enhancing commuter travel, residents in Sydney's western suburbs can look forward to enjoying the same fast and efficient service in the future.

Major Construction Milestones Transport for NSW has announced that work on the Sydney Metro West project is moving ahead rapidly, with new tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) recently arriving at Sydney Olympic Park. These TBMs, named Betty and Dorothy, have been instrumental in creating the new metro line. They have already completed 4.6 kilometers of tunneling from Clyde, near Parramatta, and are now at the site of the future Metro Station entrance at Sydney Olympic Park.

To date, the machines have excavated about 857,500 tonnes of earth, which is equivalent to nearly 156 Olympic-sized swimming pools. TBM Betty has been disassembled and transported back to Clyde to continue tunneling towards Westmead. TBM Dorothy is in the process of disassembly and will join Betty in heading to Westmead, with both expected to reach their destination by mid-2025.

Progress and Future Work Two additional TBMs, Beatrice and Daphne, are currently working on an 11-kilometer stretch between The Bays and Sydney Olympic Park. They have about two kilometers remaining before reaching their final stop at Sydney Olympic Park.

Meanwhile, TBM Jessie is making steady progress on its journey from The Bays towards Sydney's central business district (CBD). It is currently tunneling alongside the Anzac Bridge.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen expressed excitement about the progress: "We have welcomed the world's fastest athletes and biggest rockstars to Sydney Olympic Park, and now it's time for Metro West's superstar TBMs to shine in Sydney's west. This new rail line will provide sports and entertainment fans with unmatched access and greatly improve transport options during major events."

Future Benefits and Timeline The Sydney Metro West project is designed to double the rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. Once completed, it will connect key locations including Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont, and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.

However, the Metro West line is not expected to open until 2032. Until then, the construction teams are working diligently to ensure that this ambitious project meets its goals and delivers significant benefits to Sydney’s growing population.
