Supreme Court Urges Emergency Meeting on Delhi's Water Crisis

New Delhi: The Supreme Court directed the Upper Yamuna River Board to convene an urgent emergency meeting on June 5 involving all stakeholder states to address the water shortage faced by Delhi residents. Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and KV Viswanathan of the vacation bench set the plea of the Delhi government seeking additional water from Haryana for a hearing on June 6, requesting minutes of the meeting and suggestions on the steps taken.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the Delhi government, highlighted the extreme heatwave in Delhi and emphasized the importance of maintaining water levels at the Wazirabad plant. The bench suggested Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre and Haryana government, conduct a joint meeting of stakeholders to address the issue. Mehta noted that the Upper Yamuna River Board was already considering the matter but pointed out the alleged wastage of water in the city. He urged the Delhi government to address the issue of nearly 50% water wastage. Counsel for Himachal Pradesh offered to provide water to Delhi through its canal network via Haryana.

Amidst the water scarcity in the national capital, the Delhi government approached the Supreme Court seeking immediate additional water from neighbouring Haryana. The plea cited the acute shortage of water triggered by severe heat conditions, causing a surge in water demand and disrupting daily life. The petition highlighted the agreement with Himachal Pradesh to share surplus water, emphasizing the need for Haryana's facilitation and cooperation in transporting the water to Delhi. The Delhi government has raised the issue with Haryana but is yet to receive a response.

The plea clarified that Delhi seeks the surplus release of water from Haryana as a one-time solution to address the ongoing water crisis in the national capital. The government intends to resolve the emergency promptly without shifting blame to any state.
