‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’: Kannada Short-Film Qualifies For Oscars 2025

The Kannada short film ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,’ directed by Chidananda S. Naik, has officially qualified for the 2025 Oscars in the Live Action Short Film category. Produced by the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), this film has already made waves on the international stage, clinching the top prize at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival’s La Cinef Selection earlier this year.

Set against the backdrop of the Indian landscape, this 16-minute short film unfolds entirely at night, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its vibrant culture and atmosphere. The story revolves around an elderly woman who steals a rooster from her village, leading to an abrupt halt of sunlight and chaos within the community. In a quest to restore order, a prophecy is called upon, resulting in the exile of the woman’s family as they set out on a journey to reclaim the rooster.

The La Cinef Jury at Cannes praised the film for its exceptional storytelling and direction. They stated, “An illumination that, from the depths of the night, shines with humor and a keen sense of direction; the first prize is awarded to ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ by Chidananda S. Naik.” This recognition highlights the film’s impact and artistic vision.

Director Chidananda S. Naik shared his excitement about the project, emphasizing his desire to bring this story to life. “Our goal was to recreate the experience of not merely hearing these stories but of genuinely living them—an experience I hope resonates with audiences around the globe,” he expressed.

In addition to its Oscar qualification, the film also received the Best Indian Competition Award at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival held in August, further solidifying its place in the film industry.
