Sudan Conflict Escalates: 85 Killed in Paramilitary Attack on Village

Khartoum: A tragic incident occurred in Sudan on Saturday as fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a brutal attack on a village, resulting in the deaths of at least 85 people, including women and children. The attackers set homes ablaze and caused widespread destruction. Officials have described this as one of the most severe incidents in the 18-month-long conflict.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry reported that over 150 villagers were injured during the RSF attack. This paramilitary group has been repeatedly accused of committing atrocities, including genocide and rape, since the conflict began in April of last year. According to reports, villagers recounted how hundreds of RSF fighters stormed the village, surrounding it and engaging in hours of shooting and looting. Eyewitnesses reported seeing more than 80 bodies, including those of 24 women and minors, at a local hospital.

The situation in Sudan has been deteriorating rapidly. The International Organization for Migration estimates that over 10.7 million people have been displaced since the conflict began, with more than 2 million fleeing to neighboring countries.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan is between the country's military, led by General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The tension between the two groups reached a breaking point on April 15 of last year, but its origins trace back to April 2019, when a popular uprising led to the overthrow of Sudan's then-President Omar al-Bashir. Although a Sovereignty Council was formed to govern the country, disagreements between Burhan and Daglo eventually escalated into full-scale war.

The Sudanese army comprises around 300,000 soldiers, while the RSF has over 100,000 fighters, with a strong presence in the Darfur region. Sudan has a long history of civil war and unrest, even predating its independence.
