Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro will not be launching in India anytime soon, as the company faces a significant hurdle related to Indian telecom policy. While delayed console launches are not new to the Indian market, Sony has provided a specific reason for the postponement this time.
The PS5 Pro, which debuted in several countries on Thursday, boasts advanced features including support for WiFi 7, a new standard that operates on the 6 GHz spectrum. This spectrum is widely used for home broadband in many countries, but in India, it has become a point of contention. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents major telecom players like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, is pushing for the 6 GHz band to be reserved for mobile internet technologies, such as 5G.
As a result, the PS5 Pro’s release in India is indefinitely delayed due to this regulatory issue. The console itself, priced at $699.99 in the US (roughly Rs 59,000), promises an upgraded gaming experience with enhanced graphics and performance. The PS5 Pro features Advanced Ray Tracing for more realistic visuals and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven technology that improves game resolution without reducing frame rate, ensuring smoother gameplay even in demanding conditions.
The PS5 Pro also maintains compatibility with existing PS5 accessories, such as the PlayStation VR2 and DualSense Edge controller. However, unlike its predecessor, the PS5 Pro is a disc-less model, offering buyers the option to purchase an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately.
