The Sikkim State Government has permitted schools to resume regular classes for students of Pre-Primary to Class 5 students from 15th February 2021 onwards. Schools for these students are being reopened after a gap of 11 months and students and teachers have been advised to follow strict COVID-19 guidelines and standard of procedures while attending regular classes. An official circular has been issued by Elementary Education and Samagra Shiksha Director Bhim Thatal. The circular directs all state-run, government-aided and private schools to reopen the educational institutions for LKG to class 5 students. Prior to this, the state government had already commenced phase-wise reopening of schools for senior students in the state since October 2020. All the school administrators have been asked to ensure complete compliance with the COVID-19 precautionary guidelines and SOPs. As per the guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry and State Education Department, following the reopening of schools, attendance of students would be kept voluntary. In addition, students will have to carry a written consent letter or permission letter from their parents in order to be allowed to attend regular classes. For the initial period, the schools at the primary level will operate with 50 percent capacity or alternatively on an odd-even roll number basis. The schools will operate till 2 pm on every working day. Hostel facilities may also be available with COVID-19 guidelines in place.
