New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday sought the Supreme Court to hear the case involving the legitimacy of the EWS quota in postgraduate courses in medical institutions as soon as possible. After failing to have the case listed on Tuesday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta asked a bench led by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana to schedule a hearing. Because resident doctors are protesting, Mehta stressed that the issue must be addressed immediately. Mehta was advised by the Chief Justice that he needed to form a special bench. Justice Ramana sadi:-"Let's see what happens tomorrow. This entire week has been a jumble..." The resident doctors are protesting, according to Mehta, and their concerns are legitimate. "If it is a three-judge bench matter, it will be listed before a three-judge bench tomorrow," the bench added. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the Rs 8 lakh income threshold used to determine the EWS is far stricter than the one used to determine the OBC creamy layer.
