Sachin Tendulkar, the cricketing legend, is set to assume the role of 'national icon' for the Election Commission of India. The aim behind this designation is to enhance voter engagement and participation in the electoral procedures. In a ceremony held in New Delhi and attended by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, a Memorandum of Understanding was formally endorsed with Sachin Tendulkar for a span of three years. Within this triennial commitment, Tendulkar will actively promote voter awareness. The core objective of this partnership is to tackle the indifference displayed by urban residents and the younger generation towards the act of voting. The Election Commission envisions utilizing Tendulkar's unmatched influence, particularly among the youth, to invigorate their involvement in the upcoming elections, most notably the 2024 general elections for the Lok Sabha. The Election Commission has a history of collaborating with esteemed individuals from diverse domains, designating them as "national icons" to galvanize citizens to partake in the democratic process. Notably, in the past year, actor Pankaj Tripathi was bestowed with this honor. Prior to this, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, eminent personalities like MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom served as the EC's national icons.
