Rohit Sharma Targets Captaincy Milestone: Eyes Surpassing Virat Kohli's T20I Run Record

Indore: In the upcoming 2nd T20I between India and Afghanistan at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on January 14, Team India's skipper Rohit Sharma aims to surpass Virat Kohli's captaincy record in T20Is. Rohit, who made a comeback in T20Is after almost 14 months in the series opener in Mohali, faced disappointment with a duck, courtesy of a run-out mix-up with Shubman Gill.

Despite the setback, Rohit Sharma is on the verge of surpassing Kohli's record for the most runs as a T20I captain. Currently, Rohit has scored 1527 runs in 52 T20Is as India's captain and requires another 44 runs to exceed Kohli's tally of 1570 runs in 50 T20Is during his captaincy stint. After Kohli stepped down as T20I captain following India's performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Rohit took over the leadership.

Rohit Sharma, known as the "Hitman," anticipates a strong comeback in the 2nd T20I in Indore, a venue where he has previously thrived. In a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2017 at the Holkar Stadium, Rohit set the record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian batter, achieving it in just 35 balls.

While Rohit returned to the T20I format in the 1st match in Mohali, Virat Kohli is set to make his comeback in the 2nd T20I in Indore. Both experienced batsmen were included in the T20I squad for the Afghanistan series for the first time since November 2022, following India's exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Kohli missed the first T20I due to personal reasons but joined the team in Indore ahead of the 2nd game. The Indian stalwart aims for a significant comeback against Afghanistan as he seeks to solidify his place in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad upon his return to the format.
