Wayanad: Reliance Jio has significantly enhanced its network capacity in Wayanad by setting up a second dedicated tower in response to the recent landslides. This action comes after a request from the State Disaster Management Authority. The new tower aims to improve connectivity in the disaster-stricken areas, benefiting both residents and rescue teams.
The expanded network will aid in better communication for distressed residents, rescue workers, and disaster management teams. It also extends coverage to control rooms and relief camps, enhancing coordination in the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
In addition to Jio's efforts, the Indian Army has intensified its rescue operations. Troops from the Madras Sappers built a temporary 100-foot bridge at Choorlamalai overnight, facilitating quicker evacuation and improving access to affected areas.
The landslides in Wayanad have claimed 277 lives as of Thursday, according to the Kerala Revenue Department. The Department of Information and Public Relations (PRD) Control Room reports that 96 victims have been identified, including 77 men, 67 women, and 22 children. Post-mortem examinations have been completed for 166 bodies and 49 body parts, with 75 bodies returned to their families.
In response to the tragedy, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has announced financial assistance, offering Rs 2 lakh to the families of deceased victims and Rs 50,000 to each injured individual.
