New Delhi: Apex Sikh body, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), criticized recent remarks made by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in Parliament, alleging he incorrectly linked Guru Nanak Dev's ideology with 'abhaya mudra.' Alongside addressing Gandhi's remarks, the SGPC also banned any artist or actor from performing videography at the Golden Temple complex for promotional purposes. This decision follows the booking of fashion designer Archana Makwana for performing yoga at Harmandar Sahib. The Sikh body announced these measures during an executive committee meeting. Referring to Guru Nanak, Rahul Gandhi had said that the image of Guru Sahib depicting 'abhaya mudra' was "completely wrong." The SGPC resolution clarified that "Guru Sahib did not recognize any such mudra or asana. Instead, he taught to connect with only one 'Akal Purakh' (Timeless Being)," according to their statement. The SGPC condemned Gandhi's remarks about Guru Nanak Dev's philosophy and image, emphasizing that "holy Gurbani and teachings of the Gurus should not be made part of political debates without full knowledge." The resolution highlighted that political figures often misinterpret the fundamental principles of the Gurus and the meanings of holy Gurbani, causing hurt to Sikh sentiments, as reported. In the resolution, the SGPC also appealed to the Rajya Sabha Chairperson and Lok Sabha Speaker to ensure that parliamentary proceedings do not offend anyone's religious sentiments. Rahul Gandhi's Controversial Parliament Speech On July 1, during the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address, Rahul Gandhi quoted Prophet Muhammad to underscore the Quran's message of fearlessness. He stated, "When hands are raised in dua, the abhaya mudra can also be observed in a way." Gandhi also displayed images of Lord Shiva, Jesus Christ, and Guru Nanak, referencing multiple religions to highlight the importance of fearlessness. He cited teachings from Guru Nanak, Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Mahavir, along with attributes of Lord Shiva, to emphasize that all religions advocate "daro mat, darao mat" (do not be scared, do not scare others). Gandhi pointedly criticized BJP MPs, stating: "Shivji says 'daro mat, darao mat', shows the 'abhaya mudra' (the right hand held upright with the palm facing outwards), talks about 'ahimsa', but those who call themselves Hindus indulge in hatred, violence, and untruths round the clock." Muslim Community's Reaction During his speech on July 1, Rahul Gandhi showed pictures of various religious figures and referenced 'abhaya mudra,' which sparked backlash from the Muslim community. Syed Nasiruddin Chishti, Chairman of the All India Sufi Sajjada Nashin Council and successor of the spiritual head of Ajmer Dargah, criticized Gandhi, stating there is no idol worship in Islam, nor any concept of 'abhaya mudra.' Chishti emphasized that praying with both hands raised in Islam should not be misconstrued as 'abhaya mudra.' He noted that while Gandhi’s comments about other religions were somewhat accurate, his statements regarding Islam were incorrect, potentially causing trouble for Congress among Muslim voters, who are a significant support base. Political Repercussions Earlier in the House, Union Home Minister Amit Shah advised Rahul Gandhi to consult Islamic scholars before making statements about 'abhaya mudra' in Islam. Shah reminded Gandhi that Congress had no right to talk about fearlessness, referencing the period of Emergency when, according to Shah, Congress had frightened the entire country. He suggested that Gandhi should apologize for his statements. Rahul Gandhi's comments have thus sparked significant backlash from both Sikh and Muslim communities, further fueling political tensions.
