Ranchi: After the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-RJD and CPI (M) alliance secured victory in a crucial floor test in the Jharkhand assembly, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Kalpana Soren, the wife of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, at her residence in Ranchi. The visit occurred shortly after the alliance won the trust vote. Following the meeting with Kalpana, Rahul Gandhi held a public rally at Shaheed Maidan in the HEC Complex in Ranchi. Hemant Soren's recent resignation as the Jharkhand Chief Minister and subsequent arrest in a money-laundering case led to speculation about Kalpana Soren being announced as his successor. However, on January 31, the JMM surprised by naming Champai Soren, MLA from Seraikella assembly constituency, as the new Chief Minister. Champai Soren had widespread support from the MLAs and expressed confidence in winning the trust vote on February 5. Before the trust vote, Hemant Soren, present in the assembly, challenged the opposition to prove charges of land fraud against him, asserting that he would quit politics if found guilty. He accused the 'Raj Bhavan' and the Centre of conspiring against him, leading to his arrest. In the subsequent floor test, the JMM alliance secured a comprehensive victory with 47 votes in favor, while the BJP and its allies managed only 29 votes. Hemant Soren was remanded to five days' Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody on Friday in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land fraud.
