WAYANAD: Congress leader and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, visited the landslide-hit area of Chooralmala on Thursday afternoon. Despite the ongoing rain, the Gandhi siblings reached the affected site and later headed to the Community Health Centre in Meppadi, according to party sources. They planned to visit Dr. Moopen's Medical College and two relief camps in Meppadi as well. Accompanying them was AICC General Secretary and Alappuzha MP K C Venugopal. Rahul Gandhi, who won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general elections, had recently secured another victory from the same constituency. However, he also won the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh and decided to vacate the Wayanad constituency. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is anticipated to contest from Wayanad in the upcoming by-election. The Gandhis family members landed at Kannur airport at 9:30 am and traveled to Wayanad by road. The region has been devastated by massive landslides triggered by heavy rains in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha hamlets since early Tuesday. So far, 173 people, including women and children, have lost their lives in the disaster.
