Bollywood's dimple queen Preity Zinta told in one of her interviews that she feels strange uneasiness in dirty bathrooms. This is the reason why whenever she goes somewhere, she first checks the cleanliness of the bathroom. She has become so used to clean bathrooms that whether it is a hotel room or her vanity van, she ensures that the bathroom is clean everywhere. Also, Preity believes that the bathroom should be kept clean both before and after use. When more information was received on this problem, it was found that Preity Zinta is suffering from OCD. OCD patients have special concern about cleanliness, due to which they try to clean things again and again. What is OCD and its symptoms? OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder): Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental condition in which a person has repetitive thoughts or fears about something and behaves in strange ways due to these thoughts. For example, someone may become so habituated to washing their hands that they always keep sanitizer with them. There are also many misconceptions about the symptoms of OCD, and the condition can cause a lot of distress for those affected. How many people suffer from OCD? According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 1.2% of adults in the US are affected by OCD. Anyone of any age can develop OCD, but some people are more susceptible to it. Main causes of OCD The causes of OCD are not fully understood, but some possible causes include: Childhood trauma: An incident in childhood can have a bad effect on the brain. Abnormality in brain structure: Abnormality in some parts of the brain can also be the cause. Genetic causes: If someone in the family has OCD, the chances of getting it increase. Streptococcal infection: Some infections can also cause abnormalities in the brain. What are people with OCD like? People suffering from OCD often feel ashamed of their condition and try to hide their behaviour. They feel that their behaviour isolates them from others, which makes them more mentally distressed. How can you help people suffering from OCD? Telling someone with OCD that their fears aren't true can actually backfire. Research shows that reassuring people doesn't improve their condition but may make their obsessive thoughts worse. Instead, engaging them in activities like taking a walk or watching a movie to keep them occupied or reminding them of relaxation techniques may be more helpful.
