Another mishap at Mahakumbh: Pontoon bridge on Ganges in Phaphamau area collapses, several trapped, rescue on

Another incident has happened at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025. On Friday afternoon, a pontoon bridge built on the Ganges river in the Phaphamau area outside the Sangam region, suddenly broke off. There is a possibility that many devotees are feared trapped due to the collapse of the bridge. The administration, along with police and fire personnel is engaged in rescue operations. The video of the incident is going viral on social media platforms.

Before this, a stampede had occurred at the Mahakumbh at the Triveni Sangam nose area on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, which led to 30 deaths and 60 people severely injured.

As of today, the incident took place at the pontoon bridge constructed on the river, 10 km away from the Sangam area. This route is used by the devotees travelling from Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Ayodhya, Amethi, Sultanpur and Pratapgarh. There is a two-lane bridge already constructed on the river Ganges in Phaphamau. Owing to the Mahakumbh, the State Government had constructed a pontoon bridge adjacent to the two-lane bridge. Part from this, there is also a steel bridge built to ensure smooth flow of humans from one side of the river to another.

A huge crowd has gathered in Prayagraj since Mauni Amavasya, now there is a significant surge expected for the next Shahi Snan in the upcoming festival of Basant Panchami. Now the safety of the people is becoming a big challenge for the administration as the crowd is significantly increasing. As of now there is no loss of life, further updates will come soon. The rescue efforts are still going on.
