Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Wayanad on Saturday, August 10, 2024, to assess the relief and rehabilitation efforts following devastating landslides that struck the region on July 30. This visit comes 11 days after the natural disaster, which resulted in over 300 fatalities and significant destruction. PM Modi will arrive in Kannur around 11 am, where he will begin his visit with an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad. He will then proceed to the disaster-stricken regions to receive briefings from rescue teams about ongoing evacuation and relief operations. During his visit, the Prime Minister will tour relief camps and hospitals to interact with survivors and victims of the landslides. He will also oversee the current rehabilitation initiatives to ensure that effective support is being provided to those in need. A crucial part of PM Modi’s visit will be a review meeting where he will be updated on the detailed progress of relief efforts. The visit aims to bolster the response to the disaster and address the rehabilitation needs of the affected communities. Both the ruling front and the Opposition had previously urged the Central government to declare the July 30 landslides, which devastated Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Attamala areas, as a national disaster. Earlier, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the affected regions to evaluate the situation. Rahul Gandhi announced that the Congress party would support the construction of over 100 houses for landslide survivors in Wayanad. He emphasized the party's commitment to providing all necessary assistance during this critical time.
