PM Modi Launches Ayurveda Centre of Excellence for Diabetes at IISc Bengaluru

BANGALORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Ayurveda for Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on Tuesday. This event aligns with the celebration of the 9th National Ayurveda Day on October 29, themed "Ayurveda Innovations for Global Health."

The CoE will be led by Dr. Navakanta Bhat and Dr. Sona Rajakumari. Other key investigators from partner institutions include Dr. Sulochana Bhat, Head of the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI); Dr. S. Srikanta, Director of Samatvam: Science and Research for Human Welfare Trust; and Dr. K. S. Nagabhushana from the Prayoga Institute of Education Research.

CARI noted that while modern medicine provides effective treatments, there is increasing interest in exploring alternative therapies like Ayurveda. This ancient practice emphasizes prevention, lifestyle modifications, and natural remedies for comprehensive diabetes management.

To achieve its objectives, the CoE will work with prominent institutions across India that specialize in Ayurveda, diabetes, and medical research. These collaborations aim to promote interdisciplinary research, facilitate knowledge exchange, and apply research findings to clinical practice.

Dr. Sulochana Bhat highlighted the transformative potential of the CoE's research on Ayurvedic diabetes management. "By generating scientific evidence for the efficacy of Ayurvedic approaches, the Centre will pave the way for its integration into mainstream healthcare. This synergy of ancient wisdom and modern science will improve the lives of millions with diabetes and shape the future of integrative medicine," she said.
