Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi embarked on a 'padyatra' (foot march) and is scheduled to address a large Opposition rally in Mumbai on Sunday, marking the culmination of his two-month-long Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The 'Nyay Sankalp Padyatra' commenced from Mani Bhavan, the residence where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Mumbai, and concluded at the iconic August Kranti Maidan. Rahul Gandhi's sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accompanied him during the 'padyatra'. Notable personalities such as actor Swara Bhasker and Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad were also in attendance. The mega Opposition rally at Shivaji Park is expected to witness the participation of several prominent leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, showcasing a united front. This development follows the Election Commission's announcement of dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, scheduled from April 19 to June 1, with vote counting slated for June 4. On the preceding day, Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Mumbai from Thane. He paid homage to Dr BR Ambedkar at his memorial Chaityabhoomi and recited the Preamble of the Constitution. Commencing from Manipur on January 14, the yatra aims to underscore the message of 'nyay' (justice) while engaging with ordinary citizens along the route. During a rally in Mumbai's Dharavi, Rahul Gandhi reiterated the Congress's commitment to conducting a caste census and pledged an annual deposit of Rs 1 lakh into the bank accounts of impoverished women if his party assumes power. Addressing the residents, he emphasized the significance of preserving Dharavi's heritage and lambasted the Adani Group's involvement in its redevelopment. The yatra traversed through tribal-dominated Nandurbhar in Maharashtra on March 12, marking a significant milestone before its culmination in Mumbai. En route, it covered Dhule, Malegaon, Nashik, and Thane.
