Shillong: Congress has released the final list of its candidates for the Meghalaya Assembly elections. A senior Congress leader gave information in this regard on Sunday (January 29). State Congress unit president and MP Vincent H Pala has told that the party's Central Election Committee (CEC) has formed the final list of five candidates. He has told that these candidates are Jhanika Siangshai (Khalihariyat), Arbiankam Khar Sohmat (Amlarem), Chireng Peter R Marak (Kharkutta), Dr. Twel K Marak (Resubelpara) and Karla R Sangma (Rajabala). On January 25, Congress released a list of 55 candidates for the elections to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly to be held in late February. Pala's name was in the first list and he will contest from the Sutanga-Sapung assembly seat in East Jaintia Hills district. The Congress won 21 seats in the 2018 assembly elections, but later all its MLAs went to other parties, including the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the ruling National People's Party. Before the Meghalaya elections, the BJP may forge an alliance with the National People's Party (NPP). BJP's National Vice President M Chuba Ao has not ruled out the option of forging an alliance with NPP. The relationship between the BJP and the NPP, which heads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government, was strained due to various reasons. Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma is the National President of the NPP, the only national party in the North East region. The BJP with two MLAs (including a minister) is an ally of the MDA government.
