Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in India today and was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Delhi late Monday evening on a three-day official visit to India at the invitation of Narendra Modi.
First visit to India
This is the Malaysian Prime Minister's first visit to India after assuming office in November 2022. After meeting PM Modi, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Meeting with the President and Foreign Minister
During Prime Minister Ibrahim's visit, PM Modi will host a lunch in his honour. After this, the Malaysian Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President Draupadi Murmu. Apart from this, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also meet the Malaysian leader.
India–Malaysia relations
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that India and Malaysia share strong historical and socio-cultural ties. The foundation of the strategic partnership between the two countries was laid during Prime Minister Modi's visit in 2015. Next year, the two countries are entering the second decade of the advanced strategic partnership, and this visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen India-Malaysia relations.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is accompanied by Malaysian Foreign Minister Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hassan, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, Tourism Minister Dato Sri Tion King Sing, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
Industry and Round Table Meeting
During his visit, Prime Minister Ibrahim will attend a roundtable meeting with Indian industry leaders. In addition, he will deliver a lecture on 'Towards an Emerging Global South: Leveraging Malaysia-India Relations' at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA).
Possibility of joining the BRICS alliance
Malaysia is India's third-largest trading partner among ASEAN member states and the largest partner among the eight South Asian countries in 2023. During his visit, the Malaysian Prime Minister is expected to seek India's support to join the BRICS alliance. BRICS is an inter-governmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The alliance has added four new members - Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates - on January 1, 2024.
