Mumbai: The Maharashtra Congress held a strategic meeting on Sunday to prepare for the upcoming state assembly elections. The meeting was attended by key figures including Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala, state Congress President Nana Patole, and prominent leaders such as Prithviraj Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Naseem Khan, and Nitin Raut. In a related development, former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena (UBT), criticized Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Speaking to party workers in Pune on Saturday, Thackeray declared that the forthcoming electoral battle would determine the fate of Fadnavis and the BJP in Mumbai. He used a derogatory term, "Kalingad" (a reference to Fadnavis), and dismissed him as unworthy of a serious challenge, emphasizing his own superiority over Fadnavis and labeling the BJP as a group of robbers. The state is expected to hold elections for its 288-member legislative assembly later this year, as the current government's term concludes in 2024. The Election Commission has yet to announce the official dates for the elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP's seat count in Maharashtra dropped to nine from 23 in the previous election, with a vote share of 26.18 percent. The Congress slightly improved its position, winning 13 seats. The Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured seven and one seats respectively, while the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) obtained nine seats, and the NCP led by Sharad Pawar won eight seats.
