Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has been issued a notice by the Kolkata Police for tweeting what they claim is "false information" regarding the investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case. Ray has been summoned to appear at the police headquarters at 4 pm today following his tweet, which criticized the handling of the case and called for a rigorous probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He questioned the delay in deploying sniffer dogs at the crime scene and raised concerns about the investigation’s transparency. In his tweet, Ray demanded that the CBI conduct a thorough investigation, including the custodial interrogation of the ex-Principal and Police Commissioner. He accused the authorities of mishandling the investigation and claimed that the sniffer dogs were deployed only after a significant delay. The Kolkata Police have responded by stating that Ray's claims are incorrect, asserting that sniffer dogs were deployed on August 9 and August 12, not three days after the incident as Ray had suggested. The police have issued a notice under Section 35(1) of the BNS (Bengal Penal Code) in response to the tweet. Ray’s comments have also sparked criticism within his own party. Fellow Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh described Ray’s remarks as “unfortunate” and defended the police’s efforts. Ghosh emphasized that while justice for the RG Kar case is important, Ray’s public criticisms were misguided, especially coming from a senior leader. Ghosh maintained that the police had been diligent in their investigation and that questioning their integrity publicly is counterproductive. This incident highlights the sensitive nature of discussing crime and investigation-related issues in Bengal, suggesting that raising questions about the handling of such cases can lead to significant backlash.
