Kerala Records 121 Electrocution Deaths in 2023, Urgent Safety Alert from KSEB

Thiruvananthapuram: Following the tragic accidental electrocution of two young individuals while attempting to ensnare wild boars in Palakkad, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has taken immediate action by issuing a public safety advisory. In addition, KSEB has disclosed alarming statistics concerning electrocution incidents within the state for the current year.

In an official statement released on Thursday, KSEB revealed that a total of 121 fatalities resulted from 265 electrocution-related accidents in 2023. Among these grim statistics, 10 lives were lost in the course of unauthorized electrical work, while 17 individuals succumbed to the consequences of earth leakages. Additionally, 15 tragic deaths occurred during the handling of metallic poles.

Disturbingly, two individuals met their untimely end due to electric fence-related shocks, while seven others tragically lost their lives while arranging lighting fixtures for celebratory occasions.

KSEB has emphatically underscored that adherence to safety protocols could have prevented these calamities. They advocate for the utilization of Residual Current Circuit Breakers (commonly referred to as ELCBs or Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers) at the inception of electrical wiring projects. This measure proves effective in averting electric shocks resulting from unforeseen power surges.

Furthermore, KSEB implores the public to abstain from utilizing low-quality plastic-insulated wiring materials during festivities. They emphasize the necessity of obtaining the requisite permissions from section officers in their respective areas before undertaking electrical decorations in proximity to KSEB installations. Furthermore, KSEB insists that only contractors approved by the electrical inspectorate should be entrusted with beautification tasks.

In an additional stern warning, KSEB strongly advises against the use of metal poles or ladders in close proximity to electric power lines, as these actions have resulted in over 130 fatalities.
