Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh names chief justice of Tripura

AGARTALA: The President of India today, April 11, appointed the judge of Jharkhand high court Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh as chief justice of Tripura high court, which has been lying vacant for the last few months.

Notably, Justice Singh got enrolled as an advocate and practiced at Jharkhand high court and Patna high court from 1990 till his elevation as additional judge of the high court of Jharkhand in 2012. He also filled in as the Jharkhand High Court's acting Chief Justice from December 22, 2022, until February 19, 2023.

On January 25 of last year, the collegium proposed the appointment of Justice Jaswant Singh, a judge of the Orissa high court, as the chief justice of the Tripura high court. However, just one week after Justice Singh's appointment, on February 22, Justice Singh announced his retirement from the service.

The collegium then recommended that Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh be appointed chief justice of the Tripura high court. Since Justice Indrajit Mahanty retired from the Tripura High Court on November 10 of last year, the position of chief justice has been vacant.

"As per the relevant provisions of the Constitution of India, the President of India has appointed Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Judge of Jharkhand High Court as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court," tweeted Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in reference to the appointment.

The Tripura high court, which has a sanctioned strength of five judges but is currently operating with only two judges, including the acting chief justice, has received letters from as many as 258 lawyers from various Tripura Bar Associations asking him to take action to fill the vacant posts of judges.
