JD Vance Resigns from Senate to Step Into Vice President Role

Vice President-elect JD Vance has officially announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate, effective Friday. The announcement came through a letter addressed to Ohio Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who now holds the responsibility of appointing Vance’s successor.

In his heartfelt letter, Vance expressed gratitude to the people of Ohio for entrusting him with the role of representing them in the Senate. “To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of serving you in the Senate of United States . When I was elected to this office, I pledgedto never forget where I came from, and I have strived to uphold that promise every day,” Vance wrote.

As he prepares to assume his new duties as Vice President of the United States, Vance reflected on his Senate tenure. “It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve Ohio in the Senate over the past two years,” he added.

Governor to Appoint Successor

Governor DeWine is now tasked with selecting a temporary replacement for Vance, who was elected to a six-year Senate term in 2022. The appointee will serve until December 2026, with the option to run for the remaining portion of the term in the November 2026 election.

A number of prominent Ohio Republicans have shown interest in the seat, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Treasurer Robert Sprague, U.S. Representative Mike Carey, state Senator Matt Dolan, former Republican state chair Jane Timken, and GOP attorney and strategist Mehek Cooke.

Lt. Gov. Husted Emerges as Frontrunner

Among the candidates, speculation has recently focused on Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted. He accompanied Governor DeWine on a recent trip to Mar-a-Lago for discussions with President-elect Donald Trump, further fueling speculation.

Husted, who was present at the Statehouse during a bill-signing event, kept his comments brief, stating, “We’re considering all the options, and that’s really all I have to say.”

Husted’s Political Aspirations

Husted, a former Ohio House speaker, state senator, and two-term secretary of state, has long been seen as a frontrunner for the governor’s office in 2026. His extensive political experience and current role as lieutenant governor position him as a strong contender for the Senate seat.

Governor DeWine’s decision is expected to significantly shape Ohio’s political landscape in the coming years.
