New Delhi, Sep 5 — India is making significant advances in green energy and is dedicated to collaborating globally for a sustainable future, stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his virtual address at the inaugural International Solar Festival. PM Modi highlighted that India’s commitment to renewable energy is evident through its achievements, noting that the country has become the first G20 nation to meet its Paris Agreement targets for renewable energy. He pointed out that India’s solar energy capacity has surged 32 times over the past decade, a trend that will support the nation’s goal of reaching 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. To promote global solar energy adoption, PM Modi emphasized three key elements: awareness, availability, and affordability. He urged increased efforts to raise awareness about sustainable energy, boost domestic solar manufacturing, and implement specific schemes to make solar energy more accessible and affordable. One such initiative is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched earlier this year. This program aims to provide free electricity to households by investing Rs 750 billion, with the target of helping 10 million homes install rooftop solar panels. The scheme offers financial aid and low-interest, collateral-free loans to encourage solar adoption, allowing households to generate clean electricity and sell surplus power back to the grid. The International Solar Festival, organized by the International Solar Alliance (ISA), celebrates global solar advancements. Since its inception in 2015, the ISA has grown to include 100 member countries, with 19 additional nations expected to join soon. PM Modi commended the ISA for aiding 44 countries in developing solar infrastructure, resulting in nearly 10 gigawatts of additional electricity. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting global efforts towards an inclusive, clean, and green planet.
