India-China Relations Strengthen with LAC Disengagement Deal, Jaishankar Meets Wang Yi in Brazil

India and China are making strides toward improved relations following the recent disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. In a significant diplomatic move, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. This meeting comes just days after both countries completed the disengagement process in the Demchok and Depsang regions.

The meeting marked the first high-level engagement between the two countries since the disengagement, which was a major step in easing tensions along the disputed border. Dr. Jaishankar and Wang Yi took stock of the progress made and discussed the next steps for further strengthening bilateral ties.

After their discussions, Dr. Jaishankar shared an update on social media, noting, "Met CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi of China at the G20 Summit in Rio. We acknowledged the progress in the disengagement of troops along the India-China border and exchanged views on the future direction of our relations. We also discussed the current global situation."

This meeting follows a summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, a month earlier, where both leaders had discussed issues of mutual interest.

Last month, India and China successfully completed the disengagement exercise in the Depsang and Demchok areas, ending a prolonged period of military standoff that had begun in 2020. The agreement reached by both countries has allowed for a return to normal patrolling arrangements in these areas after nearly four-and-a-half years of disruption.

As both countries approach the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, this engagement signals a positive shift in efforts to resolve border disputes and rebuild trust between India and China.
