Memorandum of Agreement for Liaison Officers: Aimed at enhancing cooperation and information-sharing to boost interoperability between the Indian and US defence forces. Regional Cooperation and the Quad Singh highlighted the success of the Quad Summit held in September 2024, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The focus was on collaborative efforts in key areas, such as:
Maritime Initiative for Training in the Indo-Pacific (MAITRI): A regional training program designed to build capacity. Quad-at-Sea Ship Observer Mission: The first-ever initiative of its kind, aiming to enhance maritime cooperation. Quad Indo-Pacific Logistics Network: A pilot program to improve response times for natural disasters across the Indo-Pacific region.
Driving Defence Innovation Both leaders expressed their support for the expanding innovation cooperation under the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem. This initiative encourages collaboration among governments, businesses, and academic institutions through joint challenges, funding opportunities, and greater visibility.
The goal is to drive technological advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced weaponry, and maritime domain awareness, ensuring that both countries stay at the forefront of cutting-edge defence capabilities.
Building Future-Ready Defence Capabilities This meeting followed India's recent acquisition of 31 MQ-9B drones from the US, a deal worth $3.5 billion. These drones will be distributed across the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force, bolstering surveillance and combat readiness, particularly in the maritime domain.
Additionally, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is currently negotiating a significant deal with GE Aerospace for the joint production of F414 engines in India. This agreement is expected to bridge technology gaps, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, and potentially open avenues for future exports.
