India Aims to Become Global Hub for Drone Manufacturing: Rajnath Singh

India is focused on becoming a global leader in drone manufacturing as new technologies reshape the nature of warfare, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Singh highlighted that the government is adopting an 'adaptive defence' approach to address emerging security challenges.

Singh explained that adaptive defence involves more than just reacting to past events; it is about anticipating potential threats and proactively preparing for them. He emphasized the importance of cultivating a mindset that can innovate, adapt, and thrive, even in unpredictable situations.

"Key elements of adaptive defence include situational awareness, flexibility at both strategic and tactical levels, resilience, agility, and integration with cutting-edge technologies," Singh added. He stressed that adaptive defence should be at the heart of India's strategic plans and military responses, calling it essential to securing the nation’s future.

Singh pointed out that as threats to India have evolved, the country's defence strategies must evolve as well. "It’s about more than just protecting our borders; it’s about securing our future," he said.

The Defence Minister also noted that India is working towards becoming a global hub for drones, with multiple initiatives already underway to support this goal. He explained that this move would not only benefit the Indian economy but also contribute significantly to the "Make in India" and "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiatives.

Singh observed that drones and swarm technologies are fundamentally changing warfare. He explained that traditional concepts of warfare, across land, air, and water, are being reshaped by these new technologies, which blur the lines between these domains.

The Defence Minister also discussed the wide range of security challenges India faces, including traditional border threats and unconventional issues like terrorism, cyber-attacks, and hybrid warfare. He emphasized the government's commitment to building a strong, self-reliant defence ecosystem, noting initiatives such as the establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff, promoting joint operations among the armed services, and forming new global defence partnerships.

Singh called for a collaborative approach to tackle modern defence and security challenges. "In today’s geopolitical landscape, a collaborative defence approach is vital, especially with the growing complexities of cyberspace, AI, and emerging technologies like quantum and nanotech," he said.
