Only rain and no gain - Gabba test ends in a draw, R Ashwin announces retirement mid series

The third test in Brisbane was an on and off game. With rains interrupting the game ever since the morning it began, finally the game has ended in a draw. The five match series has levelled to 1 -1 after today’s result.

-India was way behind Australia but has now managed for a draw, avoiding the defeat. Let us look at the key highlights of the test match –

-The score of Australia in the first innings was 445/10 and India was 260/10.

-India could avoid a follow on with the lower order putting up a brilliant show. Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah fought valiantly after K L Rahul was dismissed. 

-By the fifth day, Australia were 89/7. They declared the innings at 275 for India to chase.

-The second Indian innings of the second session was just a play for 2.1 overs. The score read 8 – 0, when the match was abandoned by bad light, followed by heavy rains.

-Jasprit Bumrah took 9 wickets in the match. However, the player of the match was Travis Head who scored 152 runs for his team.

-The shocking retirement of India all- rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, that too in the mid of the series.

Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement after the end of the third test at Brisbane of the Border Gavaskar trophy. With immediate effect, Ashwin will be retired from all formats of International cricket. In a long and prestigious career that spans over a decade, Ashwin has some incredible performances and countless achievements to his credit. Biography –

Ravichandran Ashwin was born on September 17, 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Ashwin’s father Ravichandran was a fast bowler at the club. So basically he has a cricket background from the family. He has been playing cricket since the age of nine. His primary schooling was at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan. He finished higher secondary from St. Bede’s school. Ashwin is also a B. Tech in Information Technology from SSN college of Engineering. He has been coached by Chandrasekhar Rao and C.K Vijaya Kumar.

Ashwin made his debut in first class cricket playing for Tamil Nadu in December 2006. The 38-year-old was an off spin bowler and a lower order batsman in the Indian Cricket team. Ashwin’s international career started in 2010, where he played his first ODI against Sri Lanka. While his test match debut came in 2011 against West Indies. While he gained fame in the IPL 2010, where he played for the franchise Chennai Super Kings.

The spinner is married to Prithi Narayanan and has two daughters. He is a tech and fitness enthusiast too.

R Ashwin is the seventh highest test wicket taker in the world.

Ashwin is the greatest spinners of all time with 537 test wickets at an average of 24 in 106 matches. Also, in the list of top 5 spinners of all time, Ashwin is the only one with six test hundreds and 51 fifties. He has scored 3503 runs.

He is India’s second highest wicket taker in tests after Anil Kumble.

The all-rounder has 11 player of the series awards (most by any player).

While Ashwin is retiring from International cricket, he will be playing for clubs, domestic tournaments and will be joining his franchise CSK for the IPL.
