New Delhi: The branch of India's best educational institution, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), is now going to open in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This will be the first time in history that a branch of the IIT will be established in another country outside India. The new IITs in Dubai will be set up under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UAE. The two countries began formal negotiations for the trade agreement in September 2021. It may be mentioned that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) trade agreement between India and UAE was signed on February 18, 2022. Under this, the two nations will promote cultural projects, cultural exchanges, and exhibitions. India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had signed the agreement with UAE Finance Minister Abdullah bin Towq Al-Marri and Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Gyoudi. There are 23 IITs in India. These institutes are "institutes of national importance" established by the Government of India. As of 2021, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all the 23 IITs was 16,234. The identity of engineers and researchers educated in IITs is not only in India but all over the world. It's first campus in the country was opened in Kharagpur, Bengal. It was opened in the Hijlipur jail building.
