IIT Gandhinagar Prof Sudhir K. Jain appointed as new BHU vice-chancellor

Varanasi: The director of IIT Gandhinagar Prof Sudhir K. Jain has been selected as new vice-chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) by President Ram Nath Kovind, who is the visitor of the university.

Prof Jain's appointment as vice-chancellor has been certified by the Banaras Hindu University registrar office for a three-year term or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first. Prof Jain will take over as the university's 28th vice-chancellor, according to BHU spokesman Rajesh Singh. Prof V.K. Shukla, who took over as interim vice-chancellor when Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar's term ended on March 28 this year, was in charge of the affairs. Prof. Jain will take up his office on a soon-to-be-announced date, he added.

Prof. Jain earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Roorkee in 1979, followed by his master's degree and doctorate from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in 1980 and 1983, respectively. He was a civil engineering professor who worked for IIT Kanpur in various positions between 1995 and 2008 before taking over as head of IIT Gandhinagar in 2009.

He designed and built the National Knowledge Centre of Earthquake Engineering at IIT Kanpur, with the goal of disseminating information and literature and creating capability in the face of earthquake calamities.
