Hope for Air Connectivity: India-China Direct Flights May Resume Soon

The long-awaited resumption of direct air service between India and China may soon become a reality. Following the suspension of these flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions between officials from both nations suggest a potential thaw in relations regarding air travel.

Direct air service between India and China has remained dormant since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. Although the Chinese government has been actively pursuing the restoration of this air route, progress has been hampered by various conditions set forth by the Indian government concerning bilateral relations. However, recent indications suggest that China may be willing to accept several of these conditions, paving the way for the Indian government to approve the proposal for direct flights.

On September 12, a crucial meeting took place between India’s Civil Aviation Minister, K Ram Mohan Naidu, and China’s Civil Aviation Administrator, Song Zhiyong. During this meeting, Minister Naidu highlighted important issues related to bilateral relations that need to be addressed before air services can be resumed. Reports indicate that the Chinese side responded positively to these concerns and has expressed a desire for further dialogue.

The Chinese government has emphasized the importance of restoring direct flight services, acknowledging the challenges faced by Chinese businesses due to the lack of direct air connectivity. Currently, travelers between the two countries are forced to transit through third nations such as Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, or Hong Kong, significantly increasing travel costs and duration.

Since the pandemic, many other countries have resumed direct flights with India, but the route to China has remained closed. This ongoing suspension has particularly impacted business relations, prompting repeated calls from Chinese officials for the Indian government to restore air services fully.

If the Chinese government continues to demonstrate a willingness to meet India's conditions, the long-awaited resumption of direct flights between India and China could soon be on the horizon, fostering closer ties and facilitating easier travel for citizens of both nations.
