Ranchi, Jharkhand – Hemant Soren, at 49 years old, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the fourth time today, following a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections. Soren, who retained his Barhait constituency, defeated BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom with a commanding margin of 39,791 votes.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance made a strong comeback in the state, winning 56 seats out of the 81-member assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA coalition secured only 24 seats.
Soren’s victory cements his position as a dominant political force in the region, and his leadership is seen as key to continuing the JMM’s political influence in Jharkhand.
Congress general secretary and Jharkhand in-charge, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, confirmed that Soren would take the oath alone for now. The expansion of his cabinet is expected to take place after the completion of a vote of confidence in the assembly.
The swearing-in ceremony marks a new chapter in Jharkhand's political landscape, with Soren’s alliance aiming to bring about governance reforms and address key issues in the state.

Hemant Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has played a crucial role in the political landscape of Jharkhand. He has served as the state’s Chief Minister twice: first from 2013 to 2014, and later from 2019 to 2024. During his second term, Soren faced a challenging period when he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, leading to his temporary resignation. However, he made a strong comeback and resumed his position as Chief Minister on July 6, 2024.
A seasoned politician, Soren has been a member of the Jharkhand Assembly since 2005.
