Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is currently in the news. In fact, he has issued a statement late at night on the continuous incidents of rape in the state. Through his Facebook post, he wrote, 'I am also the father of a daughter and I was also disturbed by the incidents of rape.' He also said that as chief minister, my concern is for all the children of Goa. Let me tell you all that earlier there was a lot of uproar over one of his statements in the Goa Assembly. In fact, on the rape of two minor girls in Goa, CM Pramod Sawant had said, "The parents of the children should pay attention to where their children are going at night.'' When the controversy over his statement escalated, he issued his statement on Facebook late at night. In fact, he wrote on Facebook, "Being the head of a responsible government and father of a 14-year-old daughter, I was very sad and upset. This pain cannot be explained.'' At the same time, he further wrote, "At no time did I try to deny the right to security. The Goa Police is a professional force, especially when it comes to the safety of women and children. Police have arrested the accused at a swift pace. I assure you that the culprits will be severely punished under the law. The safety of citizens is our priority." He also wrote, "The safety of children, especially minors, is a common responsibility for all of us. They need the guidance of elders. Curfew has been imposed in the state and people are forbidden to go to public places. So when I talked about shared responsibility for minor children, it was my concern, care, and love for children and citizens. We all love our children. As chief minister, my concern is for all the children of Goa." Further, he added, "As a person and chief minister, I can never hurt the sentiments of my citizens of Goa. I say again that the safety of our children will not be compromised. Don't give space to misunderstandings. Stay united. Trust each other. Such evils can be defeated only by coming together."
