Flight Disruptions Ahead: What You Need to Know About Delhi, Hyderabad Airports During Festive Period

HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI: As India gears up for Republic Day celebrations, air travelers are advised to plan their trips carefully, especially if flying through Delhi. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi will experience significant flight disruptions due to security preparations, rehearsals, and parade drills from January 19 to 29. During this period, several flights, both domestic and international, will be affected, including services to cities like Toronto, Washington, Kathmandu, and Colombo.

Republic Day Flight Closures at Delhi Airport

Between January 19 and 26, flight operations at IGIA will be halted daily from 10:20 AM to 12:45 PM. While no flights will be canceled, travelers should expect delays and possible rescheduling as over 1,300 flights will be impacted. Passengers are encouraged to check flight statuses regularly and plan their journeys around these restricted hours. If you're booking a flight, it’s best to avoid those that fall within this window to minimize disruption.

Makar Sankranti Travel Advisory at Hyderabad Airport

Meanwhile, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has issued a travel advisory for passengers traveling during the Makar Sankranti festival. The airport is expecting a rise in passenger traffic during this busy time and has urged travelers to plan ahead. As the festival approaches, travelers should account for the higher volume of passengers and potential delays.

Impact of Delhi’s Winter Fog on Flights

Adding to the travel woes, Delhi’s notorious winter fog is expected to complicate travel plans. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for dense to very dense fog, which can significantly reduce visibility. On January 4, dense fog led to severe disruptions, with visibility at IGIA dipping below 200 meters for almost 12 hours. As a result, over 400 flights were delayed, 45 were canceled, and 19 were diverted.

If you're traveling to or from Delhi, keep in mind that weather disruptions and Republic Day-related restrictions could cause potential delays at the airport. These factors can impact your travel time, so it's important to plan ahead.

Travel Tips for Passengers

To make your journey more comfortable and hassle-free, here are a few general tips:

Stay Informed: Make sure your airline has your updated contact details so you can receive timely notifications about any changes to your flight schedule. Plan Ahead: If possible, avoid booking flights during the closure hours, especially between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM in Delhi. Monitor Weather Updates: Keep an eye on weather conditions, as fog can create additional delays at Delhi airport. With the Republic Day celebrations and Makar Sankranti approaching, it’s essential to stay prepared for possible travel disruptions. Regularly check your flight status and remain flexible with your plans to minimize inconvenience during this festive period.
