The Story Behind Lord Dattatreya’s Birth

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Dattatreya was born to Sage Atri and Sati Anusuya, a couple renowned for their virtue and piety. Anusuya, desiring a son as powerful as the divine trinity, performed rigorous penance. This, however, sparked jealousy among the goddess consorts—Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati—who decided to test Anusuya’s chastity.

Disguised as mendicants, the goddesses’ husbands—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—asked Anusuya for alms and requested to be fed in her natural state without clothing. Angered but undeterred, Anusuya used her spiritual power to transform the three gods into infants and nursed them.

When Sage Atri returned, he embraced the divine infants. Meanwhile, the goddesses, worried about their husbands' absence, approached Anusuya to plead for their return. Moved by their request, Anusuya restored the gods to their original forms. Impressed by her virtue and devotion, the trinity blessed her with a son, Lord Dattatreya, an embodiment of their combined energies.
