VIZAG: The impact of cyclonic storm 'Asani,' which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over Southeast Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and squally winds to parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The severe cyclonic storm was about 920 kilometres northwest of Car Nicobar (Nicobar Islands), 770 kilometres west-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 500 kilometres southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 650 kilometres south of Puri (Odisha). It is extremely likely to travel northwestwards until May 10 and reach Westcentral and bordering Northwest Bay of Bengal off the coastlines of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, according to the IMD cyclone bulletin. It is highly likely to recurve north northeast and travel towards the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha after that. During the next 48 hours, it is expected to progressively deteriorate into a cyclonic storm. On Monday, the IMD predicts rain in a few spots along the coast of Andhra Pradesh. From Tuesday evening, light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places is expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh while heavy rainfall in isolated places is expected over coastal Odisha. On May 11, light to moderate rainfall is predicted over coastal portions of north Andhra Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated spots, while heavy rainfall is likely across coastal Odisha and adjoining coastal West Bengal. On May 10 and 11, squally winds with gusts up to 60 kmph are expected along and off the coast of north Andhra Pradesh. West Central and the adjacent South Bay of Bengal are anticipated to have very high seas. Fishermen are warned not to go out into the sea over the next four days, and those who are already at sea should return to shore.
