The central government has released the first portion of the 15th Finance Commission grant for the 2024-25 financial year, specifically aimed at rural local bodies (RLBs) in Karnataka. This funding will benefit 5,949 gram panchayats across the state, as noted in a statement from the Union Panchayati Raj Ministry.
According to the ministry, the funds are allocated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, which recommend the release of these grants to rural local bodies. The Ministry of Finance then disburses the funds in two installments each financial year.
The grants are intended to support local needs within the framework of 29 areas listed in the 11th Schedule of the Constitution. However, the funds cannot be used for salaries or administrative expenses.
Key services targeted by these grants include sanitation, maintaining open defecation-free (ODF) status, and managing household waste and human waste. In addition, the grants will support the supply of clean drinking water, rainwater harvesting initiatives, and water recycling projects.
The Government of India is committed to bolstering rural self-governance, and the distribution of the 15th Finance Commission grants is part of a broader effort to empower panchayati raj institutions and rural local bodies.
