The month of October is known for breast cancer awareness, as this disease is very serious and fatal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2022, there were 6,70,000 deaths from breast cancer worldwide, of which more than 99% were women. According to a study, from 2012 to 2021, there has been an increase of 1.4% every year in breast cancer cases among women under the age of 50. Even now this disease is spreading rapidly among 20-year-old girls. Increasing cases of breast cancer among youth According to a research conducted in America, breast cancer cases are increasing rapidly among women aged 20 to 49 years. This study published in JAMA Network Open found that data of breast cancer cases in more than 217,000 American women was analyzed from 2000 to 2019. In 2000, 64 cases were reported per 1 lakh people among women aged 20 to 49. By 2016, this figure increased to 66. After 2016, breast cancer cases increased rapidly and by 2019 this rate reached 74 per lakh. This means that the risk of breast cancer in younger women has increased more than ever. Black women have a higher risk of breast cancer A study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that black women under the age of 50 have a higher risk of breast cancer than other women. In particular, this risk is 53% higher in black women aged 20 to 29. This figure is worrying and shows the extent to which breast cancer is affecting different groups. Status of breast cancer in India In the year 2018, a total of 1,62,468 cases of breast cancer were registered in India, out of which 87,090 women died due to this disease. The survival rate of breast cancer in India is around 60%, which is 20% less than the US. Cases of this disease are increasing rapidly in the cities of India as well as in rural areas. Especially young women are also falling prey to it. The main reasons for the increase in breast cancer include tobacco, alcohol consumption, obesity, wrong lifestyle and pollution.
